Christmas is fast approaching, and there has perhaps never been a better time to pick up a VR headset. If you didn’t grab any deals during Black Friday, now might be your time to strike.
There are plenty of options on the market, and prices are lower than they ever have been. We take a look at some of the top VR gifts for Christmas, covering a range of budgets and situations.
If you’re hoping to give someone the gift of virtual reality, you’ll need to make sure they first have a VR headset and a system capable of running it.
Alternatively, you may be buying for someone who already owns a VR device. In this instance, there are plenty of accessories that can complete or enhance the virtual reality experience.
And finally, if the recipient already has a full VR setup, then games are always a good choice of gift. Thankfully, there are some excellent new releases to consider.
So with that said, here’s out VR Christmas wishlist for 2018 – a selection of the best headsets, accessories and games.
The demands of this headset are high, meaning the user will have to have a sufficiently powerful (and expensive) PC. However, it’s also one of the best on the market and, thanks to a string of recent price drops, is more affordable than it’s ever been.
This headset works with the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro consoles. Black Friday saw some huge discounts on PlayStation VR bundles, giving users everything they need, including games, to get started.
Oculus are giants in the VR industry, and their recently launched Go headset is one of the most innovative on the market. It gives the user everything they need to experience VR contained in one headset. They don’t need to connect it to a PC or console, and they can enter immersive virtual reality worlds on the move.
Headsets such as the HTC Vive require the users to be constantly tethered to their PC, which can be cumbersome. However, some companies have developed wireless adapters that can be used with the device. They’re incredibly convenient and improve the VR experience.
The Oculus Rift only comes with two sensors, meaning it isn’t capable of full room-scale VR out of the box. Adding an additional sensor allows users to explore wider spaces and experience VR with more immersion.
The PSVR doesn’t come with any controllers. However, PlayStation Move controllers can be coupled with the device. Recently, Sony also released the Aim controller, which is perfect for shooting games.
If they don’t already have this game, they need it in their lives. It’s a fun rhythm game that’s engaging, moreish, and challenging. It’s available on PSVR and Windows-based headsets.
Robo Recall
This fast-paced shooter is for Oculus Rift and is one of the best VR games we’ve played. Players are tasked with ‘retiring’ a collection of homicidal robots in this frantic and exciting game.
Déraciné
This enchanting and haunting game from popular developers From Software is available for PlayStation VR. It’s a visually stunning and intriguing game.
